KIEV -- A gunman has shot and seriously injured a member of Ukraine's parliament in what police said was probably a contract shooting.Volodymyr Bortnyk, head of a wealthy firm which services farm implements, was shot in the head and chest as he left his home in central Kiev on Monday morning, police said."This has all the signs of a contract shooting," said a police source.Bortnyk, a centrist deputy, was re-elected to parliament in last month's Ukrainian election. He was reported to be in a serious condition in a Kiev hospital, but his life was not in danger. His firm, Ukragrotekhservice, had considerable influence in post-Soviet Ukraine and he was believed to have amassed great wealth himself. As in Russia, Ukrainian politicians have expressed concern about what they say is the growth of organized crime.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
