Ukraine: Drug Increase

KIEV () -- Drug smuggling is on the increase in Ukraine and there is a brisk market in locally grown opium poppies, the customs service said Wednesday.

"In just the first quarter of this year we've found almost as many illegal drugs as in all of 1994," Customs Committee spokesman Oleksandr Yeremenko said. He said nearly two tons of poppies were seized in the first four months of 1995 at Ukrainian border points.

Poppies seeds are used in the local cuisine, but are also used to make opium, Ukraine's only indigenous drug.
