ANKARA, Turkey () -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and his Turkish counterpart Suleyman Demirel signed a friendship and cooperation pact in Ankara on Monday to strengthen post-Soviet ties between the two nations.
Anatolian news agency quoted Demirel as saying the pact, together with a political consultation protocol, laid out the foundations for relations between the two independent countries.
The agency quoted Demirel as saying that Kazakhstan had also asked Turkey for $300 million credit. He said Turkey could play a far greater role in Kazakhstan's development plans.
The agreement comes before a meeting of the heads of state of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in Istanbul on Tuesday and Wednesday.
