Truce Hopes for Angola

LUANDA, Angola () -- Angolan government forces have agreed to halt fighting that is jeopardizing a peace accord with UNITA rebels that is due to be signed next week, a senior Zambian official said Friday.

"We have said to the Angolan government that we want a commitment they are going to stop the fighting, and they have agreed to that, so there should be a de facto ceasefire," the official, who asked not to be named, said.

Formal signing of the pact was due to take place next Tuesday, to be followed two days later by a ceasefire. But the government assault on the rebel stronghold of Huambo, begun just before the initialing, led UNITA to threaten to ditch the peace agreement.

A UNITA spokesman could not confirm the report.
