SEATTLE, Washington () -- Donald Treadgold, a widely read author and scholar on Russian history, has died at age 72.

He developed the ailment while revising one of his major books, "The History of Christianity," said Peter Sugar, a professor of East European history who worked with Treadgold for 35 years at the university.

Treadgold's other books include "Twentieth Century Russia," "The West in Russia and China" and "Freedom: A History." He also was a longtime editor of the Slavic Review.
