Transdnestr Delays Currency

TIRASPOL, Moldova -- Moldova's rebel self-proclaimed Transdnestr republic Monday postponed the issue of new coupons to replace Soviet-era rubles but promised they would be introduced by next month.

"The authorities are not yet ready to introduce the currency," Vyacheslav Zagryadsky, head of the Transdnestr central bank, told reporters. "Parliament will meet on Wednesday to take a final decision on when to introduce it."

He said the coupons would be brought in by Sept. 1 instead of on Monday as had been originally planned.

Zagryadsky said 180 billion units of the new currency would be put into circulation. The new coupon, bearing the portrait of 18th century general Alexander Suvorov, is to be worth 100 of the Soviet-era rubles currently in use.

Current official rates put the Transdnestr ruble at 21,000-25,000 to the dollar.
