Top Job to Illingworth

Ray Illingworth has been named the new chairman of England's cricket selectors, winning the job ahead of fellow former test captain Mike Smith. Illingworth came out on top in a postal ballot among the 18 first-class counties, the MCC and minor counties in Wednesday's vote.

The Test and County Cricket Board, announcing the news at the end of a two-day meeting at Lord's, refused to reveal the voting figures.

Illingworth, 61, led England in 31 of his 61 tests up to 1973, immediately fills the post vacated by Ted Dexter's resignation last August.
