Threat to Tajik Rebels

Russian border guards policing southern Tajikistan have threatened to destroy rebels based over the Afghan border, but a border guard commander also made a rare open offer of dialogue.

Reacting to shelling this year of border guard positions by Tajik rebels and their Afghan mujahedin allies, General Anatoly Chechulin, commander of Russian border guards in Tajikistan, said:

"I am going to state that all firing positions (of the rebels) will be immediately destroyed by all the weapons we possess," Chechulin's statement said.

But he added: "I am ready to hold dialogue within the framework of my competence."
