Tajik Casualties Rise

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan () -- Rebel forces have inflicted casualties on government troops in the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan, an official said Thursday.


The Tajik Defense Ministry official said several government soldiers were wounded Wednesday as they fought rebels around Tajikabad and Garm about 200 kilometers east of Dushanbe.


Also on Wednesday, Russian troops guarding the country's frontier with Afghanistan beat back a rebel attack, killing one and wounding one more, the official added.
