Swedish Gays Can Wed

STOCKHOLM -- Sweden's parliament has approved a law allowing homosexuals to marry but stopped short of granting them the same rights as heterosexual couples. Under the law, couples of the same sex will be able to wed in a ceremony similar to a civil marriage, but partners will not be allowed to adopt children or have children by artificial insemination. The law will take effect from Jan. 1, 1995, and the result of the vote -- 171 members for, 141 against and five abstentions -- was greeted with cheers from parliament's public gallery after a debate lasting nearly six hours.
