Soros Fund: West Slow

MOSCOW ) -- Leaders of the Soros Fund complained Tuesday that the sluggishness of Western bureaucracies was imperiling millions of dollars in aid to Russian scientists.

George Soros, the Hungarian-born billionaire, has pledged $6.25 million in 1996 for Russian scientific projects if the amount is matched by a Western government.

While millions of dollars have been set aside by the United States and European governments for scientific research in the former Soviet Union, Soros officials said at a press conference that the money is not being released.

An official at the European Commission's Moscow delegation denied this Tuesday, saying that after some initial delays, hundreds of projects were already being funded with $66 million allocated for the former Soviet Union.
