Soccer Referee Held

LISBON -- A Portuguese soccer referee has been arrested on suspicion of corruption, following investigations after media reports of alleged irregularities in the refereeing of soccer matches, police said Thursday. Jose Guimaro, 39, a referee from Coimbra in central Portugal, was arrested Wednesday evening after being interrogated for four hours.


The police investigations, which began Monday, follow local media reports of alleged corruption in refereeing league-soccer matches.
