Ski Cup Prey to Poor Weather

TIGNES, France -- The Alpine skiing World Cup had mixed success trying for an early start.

The men's giant slalom went off as planned on Sunday with Switzerland's Michael Von Gr--nigen the winner.

Still, there was a lot missing from the opening weekend: snow, good weather, a women's event and Alberto Tomba.

There was barely enough snow to lay down a decent course, despite the altitude of nearly 2,800 meters above sea level. High winds forced the cancellation of the women's giant slalom Saturday.

The wind forced the race order to revert to an old rule allowing the top 15 to come down in reverse order for the second run. A new regulation in effect this year allows the top 30 to return in reverse order if conditions are right.

Von Gr--nigen timed two minutes 21.38 seconds for his third World Cup career win. Norway's Lasse Kjus was second with 2:21.42, followed by Switzerland's Urs K?lin, third in at 2:21.68.
