Setback for Dudayev

MOSCOW () -- Forces loyal to the leader of Russia's breakaway region of Chechnya were forced to retreat from a rebel stronghold Thursday after several days of fighting, Itar-Tass said.

The Itar-Tass report, which could not be independently confirmed, said Chechen President Dzhokhar Dudayev's forces suffered heavy casualties while attacking the town of Urus-Martan, south of the capital Grozny and a key base of the Moscow-backed opposition.

Itar-Tass said opposition troops eventually forced Dudayev's men to retreat to Grozny. Quoting opposition sources, the agency also said anti-Dudayev forces were preparing a major offensive but gave no details.
