Serbs Attack Convoy

SARAJEVO -- A Serb attack on a UN convoy sent NATO warplanes into high alert amid a surge in fighting that mocked a UN-mediated cease-fire, UN officials said Friday. The attack occurred Thursday on an aid convoy about 30 kilometers northeast of Tuzla, on the northern boundary of a finger of Bosnian government-held territory jutting into Serb areas. A UN spokesman told reporters that the United Nations requested close air support from NATO planes after the convoy was attacked twice by mortar and small-arms fire. It was the first time NATO planes had been asked for close-air support since the start of a month-long Bosnia-wide cease-fire on June 10.
