SchoolTo Freeze 1994 Fees

Tuition fees at the Anglo-American School will remain the same next year at $7,600 to $10,700 depending on a pupil's grade, school director Ken Wrye said Tuesday. A year ago, Moscow parents protested angrily when tuition was raised and an annual "seat" fee of $2,500 per pupil was added, increasing total costs per student by more than 35 percent. The fee was added to pay for a new school building planned on Leninsky Prospekt. Wrye said he found other international schools in Eastern Europe have resorted to the same method to cope with rapid growth following the lowering of the Iron Curtain. "These schools, like our school, do not have any way to build up capital funds," he said. Wrye said he conducted a study of fees of other such schools in Eastern Europe this spring and said the results show that the Moscow school's charges are on a par with the others. According to the survey, secondary school students in Prague, Budapest and Istanbul pay slightly more than the Moscow school, with the costliest being Budapest, at $11,500 for top grades, and the cheapest Bulgaria, at $8,250
