Schneider's 52nd Win Opens Slalom Season

PARK CITY, Utah -- Vreni Schneider gave herself a belated birthday present on Sunday, winning the World Cup season's opening slalom for the 52nd victory of her illustrious career.

Schneider, who turned 30 while finishing third in giant slalom the previous day, earned an $18,000 bonus for the best combined result of the weekend and a total of $38,000.

Making another of her famous second-run comebacks, she posted a time of 1:39.95 to lead a 1-2 Swiss sweep. Martina Accola was second, in 1:40.58, her best career result.

On Saturday Heidi Zeller-Baehler of Switzerland charged from behind to earn the first World Cup victory of her 10-year career in the season-opening giant slalom.

Third after the first run, the 27-year-old Swiss turned on the jets despite a sudden flurry that hit the course just as she and Italy's Sabina Panzanini, who led after the first run and wound up second, pushed out of the start.

Zeller-Baehler had a two-run time of 2 minutes 22.03 seconds, after a second run of 1:07.46.

Panzanini, also seeking her first World Cup victory, clocked 2:22.44. Schneider was third in 2:23.01.
