Salary Cap Postponed

LEESBURG, Virginia () -- U.S. Major League Baseball owners agreed Wednesday to delay imposing a ceiling on players' salaries, a move which allows both sides more time to negotiate an end to the sport's three-month-old strike. The two sides agreed to resume bargaining Dec. 9.

The proposed salary cap is at the center of the baseball strike, which began Aug. 12. Owners want to place a limit on the amount of money teams can spend on players' salaries. The players' union wants to retain the current system, which permits players to negotiate individual contracts, often for very high salaries. If owners eliminate the salary system that has been in place since 1976, the union is expected to file an unfair labor practice charge accusing owners of negotiating in bad faith.
