Russians Invade Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Free from the shackles of communism, big-spending Russian tourists are coming to Rio in increasing numbers and 1995 will be a boom year for post-perestroika spending, a tourism official said Wednesday. "A bourgeoisie with lots of spending power has been born in Russia and one of the first things they want to do is travel," said Bayard do Coutto Boiteux, an adviser to Riotur, the city's official tourist agency. So far this year around 2,500 Russian tourists have visited Rio, but as many as 90,000 are expected in 1995. That is good news for the city's tourism industry, which has seen the number of visitors plunge amid concerns about violence. "Russians spend around $220 per day, that's four times the average," said do Coutto.
