Russian Force to Angola

MOSCOW () -- Russia will send 160 soldiers and seven helicopters to join UN peacekeeping forces in Angola, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

The decision, by the upper house of parliament, followed a request by United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and by President Boris Yeltsin, the agency said.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced in nearly 20 years of civil war in Angola. The southern African country is preparing itself for the arrival of 7,600 peacekeeping troops who will monitor the progress of a peace agreement signed in November.
