Russia Fuels Chernobyl

Russia has sent a shipment of nuclear fuel to Ukraine for its power plant at Chernobyl, the first step in a swap for Ukraine's nuclear warheads, an official said Wednesday.

The fuel-for-warheads deal, forged in January, was signed by the presidents of Russia, Ukraine and the United States, and envisaged Kiev surrendering all of its approximately 1,800 nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantling.

A train loaded with 120 nuclear fuel assemblies started six days ago for Ukraine, the Nuclear Power Ministry spokesman Vladislav Petrov told reporters. He declined to say when it would arrive at Chernobyl.
