Russia Backs Defense for Peacekeepers

Russia made clear Wednesday it would back measures to protect UN peacekeeping forces in former Yugoslavia and urged all the warring factions in Bosnia to abandon plans for fresh attacks, Itar-Tass said.

"We decisively denounce any unlawful action against UN personnel, including hostage-taking and attacks," Itar-Tass quoted a Foreign Ministry statement as saying.

"As a state which maintains a military contingent as part of a peacekeeping force in Croatia and Bosnia, Russia is no less interested than other countries in averting ... actions against peacekeeping personnel, whoever launches them."

Itar-Tass quoted the statement as saying Russia, if needed, would insist on ensuring relevant protection for UN peacekeepers at the United Nations Security Council.

The Security Council is expected to approve the creation of multi-national rapid reaction force for Bosnia, formed from British, French and Dutch troops.
