Rossiya Closure Order Eased

Moscow's sanitary committee said Thursday it had watered down its earlier order to close down the giant Rossiya Hotel, which has been plagued by cockroaches and rodents. Nikolai Filatov, chief physician of the committee, said he had earlier ordered the giant Rossiya Hotel to completely close down to allow a full eradication of roaches and rodents in the hotel, but had changed his mind when aides of President Boris Yeltsin appealed the decision, pointing at the shortage of cheap hotel rooms in the city. The hotel will close one section at a time. A member of the committee warned earlier this would allow cockroaches to move from section to section to avoid extermination.
