Romania Seeks Treaty

BUCHAREST () -- Romania wants to sign a new political treaty with the Russian Federation to replace one with the former Soviet Union which it considers obsolete, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"In a note sent to the Russian Embassy we reasserted that the 1970 Romanian-Soviet treaty has become obsolete," said a statement issued Thursday.

Earlier this week Romania's main opposition alliance, the Democratic Convention, threatened to call for President Ion Iliescu's impeachment and the government's dismissal unless Bucharest renounces the 1970 treaty before Nov. 6.
