Residents Back Mayor

VLADIVOSTOK () -- Residents demanded the reinstatement of the city's former mayor after a Russian court dropped corruption charges against him, Itar-Tass reported Thursday.

Viktor Cherepkov was ousted by riot police in a raid in March on orders from regional officials in this Pacific port city. Last Friday, Russia's public prosecutor said there was insufficient evidence to prove that Cherepkov accepted bribes.

Members of several political parties and local activists issued a statement Thursday urging President Boris Yeltsin to reinstate Cherepkov and his administration.
