Raul Julia, 54, Dies of Stroke

NEW YORK -- Actor Raul Julia, star of "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and the Addams Family films, died on Monday at the age of 54, hospital officials said.

A spokeswoman for North Shore Hospital in Long Island said he died of complications following a stroke.

The Puerto Rican-born Julia starred as the father in the hit comedy "The Addams Family" and its sequel "Addams Family Values,"

He also played the leading role in the film version of the South American novel "Kiss of the Spider Woman" as the political prisoner Valentin.

He began his career as a Shakespearean stage actor, starring in the New York Shakespeare Festival's "Macbeth" (1966) and "Othello" (1979) and opposite Meryl Streep in "The Taming of the Shrew" (1978).

He also appeared alongside Harrison Ford in the film thriller "Presumed Innocent" as attorney Sandy Stern, and with Clint Eastwood in "The Rookie."

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
