Rangers Name Manager

ARLINGTON, Texas () -- The Texas Rangers took their turn in this off-season rotation of American League managers by signing former Baltimore Orioles pilot Johnny Oates to a two-year contract.

Oates, 48, who was fired by the Orioles on Sept. 26, was named Wednesday to replace Kevin Kennedy, who was hired as the new Boston Red Sox manager Tuesday, just six days after being let go by the Rangers.

Separately, Royals designated hitter Bob Hamelin -- whose 24 homers and 65 RBI helped Kansas City fans adjust to the retirement of George Brett -- was named American League rookie of the year by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hamelin, 26, was the first DH to win the award. Indians outfielder Manny Ramirez was second and Rangers outfielder Rusty Greer third.
