Porsche Wins Le Mans

LE MANS, France -- A Dauer-Porsche 962 LM won the Le Mans 24-hour race, taking the lead in the final 90 minutes from a Toyota that was in first for most of the last half of the race. The Dauer-Porsche with Frenchman Yannick Dalmas, American Hurley Haywood and Italian Mauro Baldi took the victory on Sunday, after the Toyota had gear-linkage problems, with a lap lead after 324 laps. The Toyota of Briton Eddie Irvine, Italian Mauro Martini and American Jeff Krosnoff had tenaciously held onto the lead over the last 10 hours of the race. It looked on its way to give Toyota its first Le Mans victory before it had trouble and ended second, just ahead of the other Dauer-Porsche, a lap behind the winners.
