Poll Surprise in Albania

TIRANA () -- Albanian President Sali Berisha has conceded that voters apparently rejected his government's draft of a post-communist constitution in a weekend referendum.

"It seems that this option did not find the approval of the people," Berisha told a news conference in Tirana. Final results have still to be calculated, but the opposition Socialist Party projections indicated around 61 percent of the 1.5 million voters had rejected the draft.

The constitution aimed to establish Albania as a democratic republic with a market economy, guaranteeing private property, freedom of religion and the separation of judicial, executive and legislative powers.
