Polish Minister Quits

WARSAW () -- Poland's centrist Foreign Minister Andrzej Olechowski gave up his lonely fight against hostile left-wing cabinet colleagues Friday and quit.

"There are fundamental differences over views on foreign policy between the coalition and myself," said Olechowski, almost the last ally of President Lech Walesa in the coalition government.

The minister was publicly criticized by Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak last week, who said he had mishandled vital aspects of foreign policy, and in October Justice Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz accused Olechowski of acting wrongly by holding down two jobs.
