Polish Left Get Boost

WARSAW -- Poland's former Communists have followed up their September general-election victory with a strong showing in regional polls despite sharp criticism from the Catholic Church, preliminary results showed on Monday. The Democratic Left Alliance, which formed a coalition government with the Polish Peasant Party after the September vote, has now emerged as the strongest political force in several town councils throughout Poland. Unofficial results showed the Left Alliance won in the central Polish cities of Lodz and Kalisz, in Legnica in the south, in the northern towns of Olsztyn and Szczecin, and also in Czestochowa, the country's main Catholic pilgrimage site.
