An extremely intoxicated Russian diplomat was caught driving drunk in Poland after police pulled him over near Gdansk, it was reported Monday.

The diplomat, whose name was not released, was stopped by police in the Pomerania province late Sunday afternoon. The officers felt that the driver was acting "strange" and tested him for alcohol, said local police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski, Itar-Tass reported.

The test showed the driver had "the positive result of three per mill," or 0.3 blood alcohol content — a staggeringly high level of intoxication, police said.

Because of diplomatic immunity, the driver was not detained.

The diplomat is reported to be serving with Russia's consulate in the Polish city of Gdansk, capital of Pomerania province, in the north of the country.

Despite his immunity, police reported the case to the prosecutors and Polish Foreign Ministry. Officials in neither agency commented on the incident Monday. The Foreign Ministry was waiting for Russia's official reaction before acting, Newsbalt.ru reported.
