Party Expels Minister

MOSCOW () --The Communist Party faction in the State Duma expelled Valentin Kovalyov from its ranks Tuesday, following his appointment as justice minister.

Gennady Zyuganov, the Communist leader, told Interfax that Kovalyov had been expelled because he had accepted the post, offered to him Thursday, without informing the party.

"There must be some kind of discipline," Zyuganov said.

Kovalyov, who is also a deputy speaker in the Duma, responded by saying that he had accepted the post "as a professional" that he was still loyal to the Communist Party faction.

Kovalyov was the first avowed communist appointed to President Boris Yeltsin's government since he became president in 1991.
