Olympics Foul Called

n MELBOURNE, Australia -- Victorian state premier Jeff Kennett called Friday for a senate inquiry into the operations of the Australian Olympic Committee.

Kennett told a news conference that he had ruled out a state inquiry into allegations that Melbourne's unsuccessful bid to host the 1996 Olympic Games was sabotaged from within.

The premier said a state probe would not be able to establish whether a Sydney-based Olympic official had undermined Melbourne's bid, but said a federal inquiry was needed to examine the accountability of Australian Olympic Committee and whether any AOC delegates had a conflict of interest.
