Norway to Lift Ban

OSLO () -- NATO member Norway may lift its Cold War ban on allies' movements in the northernmost province of Finnmark, which borders Russia, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

A spokesman for the north Norway armed forces command in Bodoe said the Defense Ministry was considering whether to abolish the restriction, introduced in 1951, now that East-West confrontation is over.

The ban on allied plane and troop operations in Finnmark, where Norway shares a 200-kilometer Arctic frontier with Russia, was imposed to avoid provoking the Soviet Union.
