Nigeria Unites in Strike

LAGOS, Nigeria () -- Civil servants, street hawkers and just about everybody else except the police stayed home in Nigeria's largest city Wednesday, the start of a strike against the military government by the nation's biggest labor group.

The National Labor Congress instructed the 5 million members of its 41 unions to join a strike by oil workers that began July 4. Except for huge numbers of police -- some driving trucks with sirens blaring for no apparent reason -- Lagos was emptied of people.

Even civil servants stayed home, despite a threat by the military government on television late Tuesday night.
