Nigeria: Protesters Shot

LAGOS, Nigeria (x) -- Police fired on pro-democracy protesters Thursday gathered outside the courthouse where Nigeria's would-be president was on trial for treason, and at least one person was killed and 15 wounded.

About 1,200 people surged around the federal courthouse in Abuja, the capital, demanding the release of businessman Moshood K.O. Abiola, who apparently won the June 12, 1993, election that was annulled by the military government. Abiola was arrested and charged with treason after he declared himself president to mark the first anniversary of the election. His trial began Thursday.

Similar riots broke out in Lagos, the main city, where the Reverend Jesse Jackson was leading a U.S. delegation to defuse the worsening political crisis in Nigeria.
