NHL Players' Plea

NEW YORK () -- National Hockey League players sent an open letter to fans, telling them that they want to play and challenging the cries of poverty by owners and league commissioner Gary Bettman.

The NHL Players' Association placed an advertisement Sunday in the form of a letter addressed to the fans in newspapers in the 26 markets that are home to NHL franchises.

Negotiations between the NHL and the players' association are to resume Tuesday. A statement Sunday by the league said it had been prepared to resume talks immediately following Bettman's Friday announcement of a two-week postponement of the 78th NHL season that had been scheduled to begin Saturday.
