New Sub Passes Test

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Russia's newest nuclear-powered submarine has run through its first rough-sea tests successfully, a news report said Thursday.

The "Dragon" officially entered service in the Pacific Fleet on July 29, a rare gift from Russia's cash-strapped navy. It was built at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur shipyards, the major Russian producer of nuclear submarines.

The Pacific Fleet, one of the biggest in Russia, has seen the number of its ships drop by 40 percent and its personnel by 30 percent in the past several years, Itar-Tass said.
