New Plans Give Space Boost

Russia's space program has gained a boost from Australia and Pakistan with plans in the works to develop a rocket with Canberra and a plan with Islamabad over joint space research.

Australia's federal minister responsible for Australia's space program, Chris Schacht, said Tuesday the Australian Space Office and the Russian Cosmos group had agreed to start the next planning phase to develop a rocket for launching small satellites from Australia.

Schacht said Australia intended to establish a Russian-Australian joint venture to develop and market a new launch vehicle, based on engines developed by Energomash and capable of lifting payloads of up to a ton into low earth orbit.

Pakistan also has its sights set on cooperation with the Russian Space Agency, a senior government official in Islamabad said Monday. Federal cabinet ministers cleared the way for Pakistan's national space commission to move forward with a memorandum of understanding with Russia for cooperation and development. (Reuters, AP)
