TALLINN () -- Estonian President Lennart Meri picked the country's Central Bank governor Siim Kallas on Monday to be the new prime minister.
A presidential statement said Kallas, 46, would begin consultations with political parties in parliament to attempt to form a broad-based government.
The statement mentioned the need to maintain Estonia's international credibility as the basis for its independence.
Estonians regard Kallas as one of the three architects of their national currency the kroon, introduced in 1992.
The choice of a non-politician to head the government follows the fall of Prime Minister Mart Laar, victim of a no-confidence vote in parliament at the end of September.
Laar remains caretaker head of government until parliament approves Kallas's nomination.
