NATO, UN Split on Use Of Air Strikes
After a nearly three-hour, closed-door meeting here with U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry, Yasushi Akashi, the UN special representative in the region, indicated he did not agree totally with Perry's position for a more aggressive air campaign in the war-torn regions of the former Yugoslavia.
Perry carried to the meeting an agreement from the 16 NATO defense ministers supporting immediate strikes, without warning, and against multiple targets when UN peacekeepers call for them.
"When it got to the question of warnings, I think you have to discuss that in light of the different circumstances,'' Akashi said.
