nAbiola's Bail Denied

LAGOS () -- Nigeria's military authorities prevented opposition politician Moshood Abiola from signing a bail bond needed for his release from detention, newspapers reported Friday.

His lawyer, Godwin Ajayi, was quoted as telling the Court of Appeal in the northern city of Kaduna on Thursday that Abiola was not allowed to sign the bond when it was taken to his place of detention.

The court is hearing an application by the government for a stay on the appeal court's Nov. 4 ruling granting Abiola unconditional bail. Abiola, widely believed to have won last year's annulled presidential election, was arrested in June and charged with treason for proclaiming himself president.
