Myers to Quit as Press Chief

WASHINGTON -- White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers has formally notified President Bill Clinton that she will leave her job as the president's chief spokeswoman at the end of the year.

"It was an honor and privilege to serve, particularly to serve President Clinton," Myers said. "This is the kind of job that requires all your time, all your heart, all your attention and it was just time for me to do something else."

Myers, the first woman to hold the prestigious White House post, will most likely be replaced by a man, sources said. State Department spokesman Michael McCurry is the leading candidate.

Myers was popular in the White House, but had to fight off an attempt by White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta to replace her this fall.
