Mozambique Vot

MAPUTO, Mozambique () -- Electoral officials Wednesday made final preparations for Mozambique's first multi-party elections since the country's independence from Portugal.

The presidential and parliamentary vote involves 12 candidates and 14 parties or coalitions. President Joaquim Chissano is tipped to win, with his formerly Marxist Frelimo party, which has ruled since independence, likely to gain a large chunk of the 250-seat parliament. His main rival is Afonso Dhlakama, leader of the former rebel Renamo movement.

The two sides signed peace accords two years ago to end a 16-year civil war that devastated the country.
