Mosstroibank President Wounded in Gun Attack

The president of a Russian commercial bank was shot in the head and critically wounded in what appeared to be the latest in a series of attempted contract killings, his colleagues said Wednesday.

Mikhail Zhuravlyov of Mosstroibank was shot twice in the head in Moscow on Tuesday as he walked from his apartment to the nearby premises of the bank, Mosstroibank official Nikolai Nikolayev said.

He said Zhuravlyov was operated on Tuesday and was conscious. Doctors thought his condition might improve in the next two or three days, Nikolayev added.

In terms of asssets, Mosstroibank is rated the 65th biggest bank in Russia.

The Association of Russian Banks says organized criminal groups are carrying out "hits" on bankers in order to seize control of the profitable banking sphere. According to the association, there were 30 attempts on the lives of bankers last year and 16 were killed.

In a separate incident, a police officer was killed and three other people were wounded when a bomb went off in their car parked 30 meters from the entrance to Vnukovo, one of Moscow's major airports, officials reported Wednesday.

The explosion Tuesday afternoon killed Major Isa Isayev, 44, and injured another police officer along with a driver and a passenger, the Interior Ministry said.

The two police officers, from the southern Russian republic of Dagestan, were in Moscow on an official trip, it said.
