Medics Mull Tougher Action

Moscow's striking ambulance doctors and medics are considering stronger measures to force the resignation of the head of the service and to start talks over better terms of employment, a labor leader said Monday.

Levon Akopov, who heads the service's union council, said the protesters, who make up about 25 percent of the 7,500 personnel, are considering using ambulances to picket the mayor's office or to block a central street.

The medical staffers have been protesting since March 1 by refusing to transport dead bodies and to turn in some required statistical data.
