Mayor Hurt In Accident

Mayor Yury Luzhkov bruised the bridge of his nose in a car crash as he was driving to work Thursday morning.

According to the mayor's press office, Luzhkov's Volga was traveling on Ulitsa Yakimanka between 9 A.M. and 10 A.M. when a nearby car made an illegal turn, "grossly violating traffic laws."

At the time, Luzhkov's motorcade was traveling at less than 60 kilometers per hour, well within the legal speed limit. The mayor was returning from Vnukovo Airport, where he saw off President Boris Yeltsin on a trip.

The driver of the offending Zhiguli was not injured, and the traffic police will investigate the crash. Although the mayor sustained serious bruises to the bridge of his nose and one knee, he went on to his office, said mayoral spokesman Igor Zverev.
