Ma's New Army

BEIJING () -- Chinese track coach Ma Junren has a promising new runner who came within nine seconds of the world women's 5,000-meter record at a national competition, the Chinese press reported Wednesday.


Jiang Po, 17, won the event at the National Urban Games Tuesday, finishing in 14 minutes, 45.90 seconds.


Wang Junxia, once the pride of "Ma's Army," as Ma's team was called, was second in 14:53.08, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily said. Wang holds the world records at 3,000 and 10,000 meters.


The report quoted experts as saying the times for the 5,000-meter event are proof that Chinese women long-distance runners are making a comeback.
