Martinez Starts Well

A rejuvenated Conchita Martinez kicked off her clay court season by soundly beating Canadian Helen Kelesi 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Virginia Slims of Houston tennis tournament.

Martinez, the top seed and defending champion, received a first-round bye and was playing her first match on Tuesday since the Australian Open quarterfinals.

Sixth-seeded Houston native Zina Garrison-Jackson disappointed her home town fans, falling 6-2, 6-4 to German Meike Babel in a first round match.
